Face Cards
We’re all errant Jacks,
Elusive, free,
Ambulatory.
Like water, washing away all earthly desires,
The Jack of Hearts endures.
The fluidity throughout inspires
The Jack of Diamonds to go.
He drives on, at ease with the hum of the car,
The taste of uncertainty ahead
He drives to the heartbeat of the wind
“Courageously” he said.
The Jack of Spades cares not for courage,
Only loyalty like dogs will do.
Malleable to any situation
Transforming himself to something new.
The Jack of Clubs, while wiser than the rest,
Sees time escaping through his fingertips.
“Hold on to it” the Jack suggests,
“Hold on” he says as he tries his best.
We’re all endearing Queens,
Regal, great,
Obstinate.
Splendor lays under the surface of the world,
The Queen of Hearts testifies so.
Her flowers remain hidden and suppressed.
But oh, how her beauty could glow.
The Queen of Diamonds has no such quandaries,
Her courageous nature breaks through.
She bends the status quo,
Like a lion hunting his food.
And like a bee pushing her helpers further
The Queen of Spades has her flowers grow,
Dead, with a lack of emotion,
Emotion that died a long time ago.
The Queen of Clubs however, sees more value in confidence,
More value in standing for beliefs,
More value in staying firm like a mountain,
More value than working like busy bees.
We’re all strident Kings,
Bold, arrogant,
Benevolent.
There is strength in comfort, strength in refuge
The King of Hearts believes.
There is strength in self-betterment.
Strength in something seemingly weak.
The King of Diamonds believes in power,
Aristocracy to the core.
Being divisive and decisive to get to the top,
How could reputation be a bore?
The King of Spades agrees in part,
Agrees that strength is power
But his dragon-like strength leads to sour fruit,
Yet fruit still created in his hour.
the King of Clubs remains recluse,
his fox seeker climbing through strife.
Higher and higher up the tree of knowledge,
Finding wisdom through the cards we’re dealt in life.
